Stars in Action
Witnesses today commemorate exactly 35 years since the famous "panenka-penalty" decided 1976 European Championship between Germany and Czechoslovakia. A football legend of Prague Bohemians football club, Mr. Antonin Panenka arrived to Liberec as regular participant #0338 of rather different continental championship. Surprisingly, not football, but the table-tennis. His presence has been closely watched by players not only from Czech lands. Almost every step Panenka was asked for signature and common photo from athletes from Austria, Finland, Russia or Lithuania. Football legend showed everyone that even the celluloid ball is not strange to him and played three tight matches in his group of M60.
Championships started-in all four halls. In none of them there was no reason for the audience to complain of boredom. In the HALL A Peter Franz and Stefan Fetzner shined proved that they have not lost anything of their sklils. Hall B was occupied by the oldest categories, with the oldest twoman-player, 90-year-old Inge-Brigitte Herrmann of Gernany. Also the oldest Czech player Vaclav Riha is very vital in his 92.
The star od the day, here, however, was the oldest player of the Championships, almost 100-years old Alexander Kaptarenko of Novosibirsk. Sankt Petersburg’s native came into the world even 3 months before the fate of Titanic. He betrayed his ambition to overcome the family record of his father, who held play table tennis up to 103 years. „Sasha“ also told he started to play table tennis „ before the war“. Somehow, he was taken by surprise with the question of Milan Simacek, Championships Director, „Exuse me, what war do you have in mind?“
